How to Clean Glitter, Rhinestone & 3D Phone Cases Without Damaging Them

Samsung Galaxy A06 purple full rhinestone butterfly back cover

The safest way to clean a glitter, rhinestone, pearl or 3D phone case is to remove the phone first, start with a soft dry cloth, and use only the minimum moisture and pressure needed. Decorative cases need gentler handling than a plain smooth shell because raised butterflies, bows, pearls, stones and other details can catch on cloths or be stressed by aggressive scrubbing.

If the exact material or attachment method is unknown, do not assume the case can be soaked, scrubbed with a brush or cleaned with strong chemicals. A careful spot-cleaning approach is the safer default.

Everacs care note:

Our decorative cases vary by phone model and design. We do not claim that every glitter, rhinestone, pearl, bow or 3D case uses the same base material, coating or attachment method, and we have not chemically or destructively tested every design. The guidance below is intentionally conservative so you do not have to guess how an unknown finish or decoration will react.

Why do decorative phone cases need gentler cleaning?

A plain case usually gives you broad, smooth surfaces to wipe. A decorative case may instead combine several visible elements: glitter, raised rhinestones, pearls, bows, butterflies, hearts, metallic-looking details or other 3D charms.

Those raised details create small edges and gaps where dust can collect. They can also be caught by a rough cloth or stressed if you scrub across them forcefully. Even when two cases look similar, their decorations may not be attached in exactly the same way.

That is why the goal is not to make the case “as wet as possible” or scrub until every mark disappears. The goal is to remove ordinary surface dirt while disturbing the decorative parts as little as possible.

What should you use to clean a glitter or rhinestone case?

For a conservative routine, keep the cleaning kit simple:

  • A clean, soft, lint-free cloth for general wiping.
  • Clean water to slightly dampen the cloth if a dry wipe is not enough.
  • A second dry lint-free cloth to remove remaining moisture.
  • Good lighting so you can see dirt around raised decorations without pulling at them.

For comparison, Apple's current cleaning guidance for its silicone, clear, polycarbonate and thermoplastic polyurethane iPhone cases says to remove the iPhone and use a soft, slightly damp, lint-free cloth. Apple also warns against window cleaners, household cleaners, aerosol sprays, solvents, ammonia, abrasives and cleaners containing hydrogen peroxide. That guidance is useful as a conservative baseline, but it does not prove that every third-party decorative finish or attachment can tolerate the same products. See Apple's cleaning guidance.

How to clean a glitter, rhinestone or 3D phone case step by step

  1. Remove the phone from the case. Do not try to wash or wet-clean the case while the phone is still inside.
  2. Inspect the decorations first. Look for any rhinestone, pearl, bow, butterfly or charm that already appears loose, lifted or damaged. If something is loose, avoid scrubbing that area.
  3. Start dry. Use a soft lint-free cloth to remove loose dust from the outside and inside of the case. Wipe around raised pieces rather than dragging the cloth hard across them.
  4. Use a slightly damp cloth only if needed. Dampen the cloth with clean water and wring it so it is not dripping. Gently wipe accessible surfaces.
  5. Work around 3D details carefully. Use light pressure near stones, pearls and charms. Do not hook the cloth under an edge or twist a raised element while cleaning.
  6. Clean the inside too. Dust or grit between the phone and case can collect over time. Wipe the inner shell gently without saturating it.
  7. Remove remaining moisture. Use a clean dry lint-free cloth and leave the empty case until it is fully dry before putting the phone back in.

What should you avoid using?

Unless the specific case manufacturer or seller has confirmed a cleaning product is compatible with that exact case, avoid experimenting with strong chemicals or aggressive tools.

  • Do not assume household cleaners are safe. They may affect coatings, printed surfaces or decorative finishes.
  • Avoid solvents and harsh chemical cleaners. Apple specifically warns against solvents, ammonia, abrasives and hydrogen-peroxide cleaners for the case materials covered by its guidance.
  • Do not use abrasive pads or rough towels. They can scratch glossy surfaces and snag raised details.
  • Do not scrape dirt away with a knife, pin or other sharp tool. It can scratch the case or get underneath a decoration.
  • Do not assume alcohol is safe for every decorative case. Alcohol can be appropriate for some hard, nonporous products, but that does not establish compatibility with unknown decorative coatings, adhesives or printed details.
  • Do not submerge the case simply because the base looks plastic. The base shell and the attached decorative pieces may have different tolerances.

Can you wash a rhinestone phone case under a tap?

Do not make that the default. If the exact construction and attachment method have not been confirmed as washable, spot cleaning with a slightly damp cloth uses less moisture and creates less risk around raised decorations.

A case may have a water-tolerant base shell while still carrying decorative parts whose attachment method is unknown. Visual appearance alone cannot establish that the complete case is safe to soak.

How should care differ by decorative style?

Case style Main cleaning concern Gentle approach
Smooth glitter finish Surface haze, fingerprints or dirt Start with a dry lint-free cloth; use a slightly damp cloth if needed.
Raised rhinestones or pearls Cloth catching around small raised edges Wipe around the details with light pressure rather than scrubbing directly across them.
3D bows, butterflies or charms Twisting, pulling or stressing the raised element Support the case itself and clean around the decoration without using it as a grip point.
Printed or metallic-looking decorative areas Unknown coating or finish sensitivity Use minimal moisture and avoid unverified cleaners or abrasive rubbing.

What if dirt is trapped around a rhinestone or charm?

First try to lift loose dust with the corner of a soft dry cloth without forcing the fabric underneath the decoration. If it does not come away easily, resist the temptation to scrape at it with a sharp object.

If the decoration already feels loose, stop working around that area aggressively. Pulling on a loose stone or charm can turn a small issue into a detached piece.

The safer principle is simple: less force is better than forcing a perfect cosmetic result.

How do you clean the camera opening and case edges?

Take the phone out first. Fold a soft lint-free cloth so you can reach the case edge around the camera opening, buttons and port cutouts without using a sharp tool.

Do not press debris toward the phone's camera or openings while the phone is still fitted. Cleaning the empty case gives you better access and keeps moisture away from the device itself.

If you are choosing a case rather than cleaning one, our guide to raised camera protection explains the difference between a raised case edge and a camera lens protector.

How often should you clean a fancy phone case?

There is no useful universal schedule for every case. Clean it when it is visibly dusty, sticky or dirty, or after it has come into contact with something you do not want sitting on the surface.

Frequent aggressive cleaning can be worse than occasional gentle cleaning. Apple also advises avoiding excessive wiping of its products because it may cause damage. For a decorative case, that is another reason to use the lightest effective cleaning method rather than scrubbing by habit.

What should you do if a rhinestone, pearl or charm is already loose?

Do not pull it off simply to make cleaning easier. Avoid soaking or scrubbing the loose area, and handle the case from the solid shell rather than the decoration.

If the case was recently purchased and you are unsure whether the loose detail is damage or part of the design, contact the seller before trying a repair. For Everacs products, you can use our Contact & Model Help page and include the exact phone model plus a clear photo of the area.

Can cleaning restore yellowing or permanent discoloration?

Not always. Cleaning can remove surface dirt, but it cannot necessarily reverse changes that have occurred within a material, coating or printed finish.

Clear or transparent case materials can also change appearance for reasons that are not simply surface dirt. If that is the issue you are seeing, read Do Clear Phone Cases Turn Yellow? Why It Happens & What You Can Do.

Buying a decorative case that is easier for you to live with

Fancy cases are primarily a style choice, so the best option depends on how much texture and decoration you enjoy handling day to day.

Before buying, check:

  • Your exact phone model. Never choose a case only because the camera layout looks similar.
  • The amount of raised decoration. More 3D detail usually means more edges and small spaces to handle carefully.
  • Real product photos. Look closely at the camera opening, side profile and decorative placement.
  • The specific colour or variant. Decorative patterns can look different between variants.
  • How you normally use your phone. If you regularly place it in tight pockets or bags with other objects, heavily raised details may require more care than a smooth case.

Frequently asked questions

Can I clean a glitter phone case with water?

A slightly damp lint-free cloth is a conservative starting point for accessible surfaces, but do not assume an entire decorative case is safe to soak. If its exact construction is unknown, use minimal moisture.

Can I use rubbing alcohol on a rhinestone phone case?

Do not assume it is compatible with every decorative finish or attachment. The safest default is a soft dry or slightly water-dampened cloth unless the exact case maker confirms another cleaner is suitable.

Can I use a toothbrush to clean around rhinestones?

A brush can catch raised details, so a soft lint-free cloth is the safer first choice. If a decoration is already loose, avoid brushing around it.

Should I remove my phone before cleaning the case?

Yes. Removing the phone keeps moisture and loosened debris away from the device and lets you clean the inside of the case properly.

What if a stain does not come off?

Do not keep increasing chemical strength or scrubbing pressure indefinitely. Some marks may be discoloration or wear rather than removable surface dirt, and aggressive cleaning can damage the finish while trying to remove them.
